Jerome Kern's stage tunes -- going back to the late '20s with the acclaimed presentation Show Boat -- right up to the '40s, will forever be at the core of quintessential American popular songs that hold a dear place in the heart of all straight-ahead jazz performers. Oscar Peterson's immortal trio with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen play Kern's themes expertly, with no small degree of interpretation, and a clever angle on these well-worn songs that only Peterson can self-identify with his genius mindset. The title should be more accurately "The Jerome Kern & Friends Songbook," as he always co-wrote with such notables as Oscar Hammerstein II, Otto Harbach, Ira Gershwin, and Dorothy Fields, but these are all instrumental versions of his priceless musical scores and are immediately familiar without lyrics. From the actual Show Boat set list, "Ol' Man River" has endured the longest, and here it rumbles with Thigpen's incredible drums, rambles via Peterson, then has the pianist and bassist in cross talk with space. "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" is a tender ballad, slowly unfolding as the chiming chords of Peterson's reflect a melodic comparison of "Stairway to the Stars." The third Show Boat revision, "Bill," is so downplayed and minimal that it is reduced to a steamy crawl. Most astute listeners will easily recognize the perky and hopped up "I Won't Dance" due to Thigpen's expert brush work, while Peterson changes up the harmonic insides of the tune and speeds along on a death-defying solo. "The Song Is You" stops and starts fearlessly then jams into fourth gear immediately, "The Way You Look Tonight" is standard, reliable fare remade in Peterson's image with no strain, and his girthy chords block out "A Fine Romance." There's always a regal side to the pianist in his ability to perceptively tone down his wilder notions; the effortless, serene, and supremely confident take of "Long Ago," a British-styled "Lovely to Look at You," and purely tender "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" act as final answer evidence. Of the many recordings this great jazz trio made, this is one of the top three, and even though it clocks in at under thirty five minutes with no alternate takes. It remains a monument to the Peterson trio's timeless quality, and is a fitting tribute to Jerome Kern's everlasting genius as one of the true great American popular songwriters.

Aussie pop princess Kylie Minogue hasn't exactly been under-represented when it comes to best-of collections, but this Japanese-only release, Kylie Hits, does at least offer something slightly different than the plethora of collections out there, concentrating solely on the noughties period that saw her bounce back from her '90s Brit-pop disaster to become bigger and more successful than she ever was in her Stock, Aitken & Waterman heyday. Kicking off with the robotic electro of "Can't Get You Out of My Head," perhaps her most iconic hit, its 14 tracks also include material from each of her last five studio albums, from the shiny disco-pop of triumphant comeback single "Spinning Around" (2000's Light Years), to the euphoric filtered Gallic house of "Love at First Sight" (2001's Fever), to the minimal electro of U.K. chart-topper "Slow" (2003's Body Language), to the feisty glam rock of "2 Hearts" (2007's X), to the shimmering synth pop of "All the Lovers" (2010's Aphrodite), all of which show how much her sound has progressed during the last ten years. Elsewhere, there is the glittery Scissor Sisters-penned "I Believe in You" (from 2004's Ultimate Kylie), a Yasutaka Nakata remix of recent single "Get Outta My Way" (also included here in its original form), and two rather random performances from the Sydney date of her Showgirl Tour ("The Locomotion," "I Should Be So Lucky"), which feel out of place among the more contemporary offerings. Considering there's a wealth of familiar singles omitted ("Red Blooded Woman," "Come into My World," "Please Stay"), the latter three seem rather unnecessary filler. It may seem silly and quaint today, but the early-'60s British film Beat Girl was one of the first movies to address subjects -- granted, in a sidelong and not terribly realistic manner -- like bohemian culture and teenage rebellion. Barry's score, performed by the John Barry Orchestra, is schizophrenic in its attempt to cover all aspects of beatnik life, resulting in an artifact that is as charmingly dated as the film itself. Smoky cellar jazz, honky-tonkin' sax instrumentals, light swing, dippy teen idol pop, snaky film noir, and menacing spy guitar -- they're all here, and all well done. Occasionally British pop singer Adam Faith (who also starred in the film) takes a lead vocal. The variations of the main theme (including a vocal rendition by Faith) are the most interesting of the lot, clearly foreshadowing both Barry's James Bond scores and the B-52s' "Rock Lobster" riff.

01 The Car Horror 1977.
Among the goings-on of the sheriffs in largely rural and desert landscaped Thomas
County, California include: divorced Wade Parent trying to introduce the notion to
his two adolescent daughters, Lynn Marie and Debbie, of their teacher, Lauren
Humphries, possibly becoming their new mother; Everett Peck believing that his
first love, Bertha Clements, is being physically abused by her husband, blasting
contractor Amos Clements; and alcoholic Luke Johnson being two years sober. Their
goings-on and issues take a back seat when they have to investigate a numbers of
deaths in different incidents, all seemingly related to a driver in what few
eyewitnesses inconclusively identify as a large dark-coloured sedan purposely
running the victims down. Wade ends up leading the investigation and as more and
more deaths occur, more evidence is collected *except* who the driver is. That
increasing evidence includes the viciousness of the incidents and the seemingly
non-destructive nature of the car. But what is happening may not be as simple as it
appears on the surface, Wade and the others who will have to figure out the
underlying issue to be able to neutralize the car hopefully forever.
