Nine years after their debut on Moonjune Records, Zhongyu returns with a new album, following significant changes in lineup and production methods. Raw and raucous, roaring and rebellious right from the word go, it comes as no surprise to find that The Idiot Kids come from Detroit, the place that gave us the mighty MC5, The Stooges, and later The White Stripes. And it isn’t hard to argue that whatever ran through the DNA of those bands is found in action here on their debut Instants.

“Bulldozer” is perfectly named for the opening salvo, a snarling, low-slung beast of a punked-up, spun-out, garage-rock salvo, a song that echoes that famous Detroit war cry to “kick out the jams (motherflippas)”. Smack, right to the kisser!

So, with the scene set, the stall laid out, and a bloody, metallic taste of things to come in your mouth, the white-knuckle ride begins. The title track is relentless and honest, and “Time For Me” throws out some boogie-some beats and hard-wired dance grooves whilst guitars spiral out of control, basslines bruise, and bombard, and vocals declare war on… well, anyone who’s listening. This music is hot as hell and twice as hard!

And then there is “Pastor’s Kid,” which is rock and roll on too much coffee, then too much speed, and then a few lines of coke, then climbing into the driver’s seat of a Chevy Camaro before flooring it and heading off into the sunset in a cloud of dust and burnt rubber fumes.

Mad, bad, dangerous to know….The Idiot Kids are certainly smart cookies and they might just be my new favourite band.

Sandoval previously discussed SONNY DREAD in an April 2024 interview with Audio Ink Radio, answering a question about whether he had any plans to work on solo material.

"I started working on a whole reggae album by myself when I was stuck at home because I couldn't go anywhere," Sonny said. "So I made it at home and contacted a bunch of different producers online. I'd check out their stuff and be like, 'Hey, send me some tracks.' I could do anything. I was planning on releasing it two years ago, and then our label and everyone were like, 'We really, really need a P.O.D. album,' and all that stuff got shelved."

Sonny continued: "I've always been a reggae fan. I love reggae music. I think the scene is probably bigger now than ever. Reggae tours are all over the world. So, I think once we get this album sorted out and touring starts to wind down, I'll definitely… I mean, I'll release either an EP or a full-length album. And then I'd like to play shows locally and maybe sign on to tour with some reggae bands, just because I love doing it."

He added: "I'm basically sitting on the finished material. I just want people to hear it."

“East Side Confessions” is KB Bayley’s third album, and it has a delightful melancholy feel to it. It feels sparse yet layered, mostly thanks to his excellent lap steel guitar playing, which is quite stunning and is accompanied delightfully by several guests who lift his playing even further. It mixes six original songs with four interpretations, the most unusual one of which is his version of the Korgis hit ‘Everybody’s Got to Learn Sometime’. He has completely changed the feeling of what was a pretty ordinary ’70s song into something quite enigmatic and far more appealing.

‘Don’t Let the Rain Fall on My Face’ has an intense Southern swamp feel to it. It relates to the last words and reflections of a dying man, someone being hanged, “They are putting up a scaffold… some come here to string me up, some come here to tear me down”, “When the priest picks up the bible, and you are all in lace, don’t let the rain fall on my face”.

Some may feel the songs are a little one-paced; however, the texture and structure more than make up for that. The plaintive harmonica playing, especially on ‘Somewhere East Of Moscow‘, is very welcome indeed, as are the delicate harmonies of Claudia Stark, which blend beautifully on a number of tracks.

The final song is an excellent cover of Patty Griffin’s ‘That Kind Of Lonely’, which he declares “This song epitomises the power of simple chords and vulnerable truth; and it contains one of my favourite ever lyrics: your eyes were following the dancer falling down a flight of stairs” (maybe not the most profound but each to their own). Performed on an acoustic guitar, it feels like all the guests have now left, leaving him alone with his thoughts as the candle flickers and burns down.

The richness of his playing and the quality of his voice make this a very listenable album. Bayley has found a spot in between folk music and Louisiana Blues, which is very noteworthy indeed. The complexity and versatility of his steel guitar are quite profound and definitely lift the album onto a different plane.

- VectorStyler is (also) a native Windows (Intel) application, and requires a PC with Windows 10 installed to run. A minimum of 8GB of system memory is recommended. More memory helps when creating complex designs or illustrations.
