Unforgiven is a 1992 western film directed, produced and starring Clint Eastwood. In addition to Eastwood himself, the protagonists are Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman and Richard Harris.
Realistic and cynical Western in which Eastwood carves out for himself the part of an old ex-gunfighter, many years after his first roles in this genre. The film received nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor for Eastwood himself, and won four, including Best Picture and Best Director; nominated for four Golden Globes, he won two, for Best Direction to Clint Eastwood and Best Supporting Actor to Gene Hackman. Eastwood's film is the third western in the history of cinema to win the Oscar for Best Picture, after The Pioneers of the West (1931) and Kevin Costner's Dances with Wolves (1990).
In the credits, Eastwood inserts a special dedication, "to Sergio and Don", to remember the two masters who launched his career and who taught him to love cinema: Sergio Leone and Don Siegel.
In 2004 the film was selected for conservation in the National Film Registry of the United States Library of Congress. In 1998 the American Film Institute placed it in 98th place in the ranking of the best one hundred films of all time, while ten years later, in the updated list, it rose to 68th place.
