Pale Rider is a 1985 western film directed and starring Clint Eastwood, probably a tribute to George Stevens' old western The Knight of the Lonely Valley (1953).
The film also recalls the character played by Eastwood in Sergio Leone's westerns, namely The Man Without a Name.
The title is also a clear reference to the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
The film was presented in competition at the 38th Cannes Film Festival.
The film was shot in late 1984 in the Boulder Mountains of Idaho, north of Dom Valley; in Columbia State Historic Park (Columbia, California) and the old Railtown 1897 State Historical Park railroad (Jamestown, California). Also, in the opening and final scenes, the jagged Sawtooth Mountains, located south of Stanley (Idaho), are noted.
