Dopo aver cavalcato l'onda del successo, però, arrivano le prime sconfitte e, come succede in questi casi, l'auto finisce
in uno sfasciacarrozze. È qui che Maggie Peyton (Lindsay Lohan), neolaureata e figlia di Ray (Michael Keaton), un famoso
pilota della Nextel Cup, si accorgerà di Herbie. Suo padre vuole infatti regalarle un’auto con la quale potrà partire per
New York, dove si trasferirà con la sua amica Charisma (Jill Ritchie).
Una volta acquistato, il maggiolino prende vita e porta la ragazza nell’officina del suo amico Kevin (Justin Long), che da
una bella sistemata a Herbie. Rimesso a nuovo, il maggiolino vuole a tutti i costi tornare in pista e così convince Maggie
a sfidare Trip Murphy (Matt Dillon), tre volte campione della Nextel Cup. La ragazza accetta e, contro ogni previsione,
vince a mani basse la gara. Ma il campione non ci sta e vuole sfidarla ancora: decide così di organizzare insieme al suo
aiutante Crash e a suo fratello Larry, due giorni in cui duecento automobili si confronteranno in 199 gare. Maggie vuole
partecipare, ma si iscriverà sotto il falso nome di Maxx. Chi avrà la meglio?
