Catarella announced by telephone to Inspector Montalbano early in the morning that Alberto La Russa had committed suicide in his laboratory inside his home and Galluzzo is on the spot. On the same night, the electrician Ignazio Cucchiara is found murdered in Vigàta and Mimì Augello, Montalbano's deputy, takes care of the case. Speaking first with her friend Anna Tropeano who found the body, then with the cleaning lady of La Russa, Maria Antonietta Vullo, she discovers that La Russa had been invalidated by a fall from a horse. He obtains other information from Filippo Alaimo, a farmer close to Alberto, who, suffering from insomnia, testifies to having seen a car leave the house on the night of his death. Once Livia arrives at the funeral, Montalbano realizes that death is not in the style of the victim. Lo Bianco manages to get another day for the investigation from the deputy prosecutor; thanks to a new search of the house, he finds a photo album in which half has been torn, as well as a pistol and a holograph will, whose only beneficiary is his brother Giacomo. At the same time he is credited with the car that left Alberto's home. After having the will analyzed by a calligraphic expert, he discovers that this is false: Giacomo is arrested, even though he declares himself innocent. Shortly after a witness, Angela Bonocore, claims to have heard a violent quarrel coming from the house in La Russa; further confirmation comes from her friend Anna, who had already found the body, who reports the news of her aunt who had seen a dark car enter the neighbor's house just before two in the morning.
