Around 1870, residents of the Fort Humboldt garrison, an army outpost, are allegedly suffering from a diphtheria epidemic. A train is heading towards the fortress, laden with reinforcements and medical supplies. Civilian passengers also travel aboard the train, including Nevada Governor Fairchild and his mistress Marica. The train stops briefly in Myrtle, where it takes on board Pearce, a local lawman, and his prisoner, John Deakin, a notorious outlaw who was identified through a photo in a newspaper article but who is actually an agent. federal undercover. Along the way, Deakin and his companion, the Reverend, discover that there is no epidemic at the outpost, but that there is actually a conspiracy between a group of assassins and a tribe of Indians. As the train heads full steam towards Breakheart Pass, the men on board continue to die one by one.
