A 68-year-old married prostitute who was doing her job in a small apartment is killed. At first glance Mimì Augello is persuaded that the murderer was a certain Mimmo Tavano, a client of the prostitute, but Montalbano with his intuition directs his research elsewhere. The commissioner discovers that the woman was being molested by an elderly man suffering from partial senile dementia, and will be able to understand that many years earlier the victim had conceived with the man his son, Marco Rampolla, since the legitimate wife could not have children. . The old man saw in the woman the image of his deceased wife, superimposed by the brief relationship between the two. Rampolla discovers who his real mother is and becomes involved: believing that the murder was committed by his father, he decides to create an alibi for him, having him hospitalized and bribing a nurse to ensure that the date of admission precedes the crime . Tavano discovers the false alibi and blackmails Rampolla, who kills him. It finally turns out that Rampolla father is not the culprit, but that the woman was killed by the high school principal, her old client and friend, in love with her, who managed her finances and who owed her money.
