The Lodger (The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog), also known as The Tenant, is a silent film produced in 1927 and directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

It is considered by its author "the first real Hitchcock film": suspense, the lability of the border between good and evil, the absolute simplification of the narrative mechanisms are the style brands that will become the signature of the "master of thrills".
The subject was proposed to Hitchcock by Michael Balcon the producer of Gainsborough. He had obtained the rights to a film adaptation of a 1913 novel by Marie Adelaide Lowndes, also called Belloch Lowndes because of Hilaire Belloc's sister. The novel was about the crimes committed in 1888 by Jack the Ripper, in East London, and had achieved great success. Hitchcock had already seen the play Who Is He? based on the same novel. Many aspects interested him: the crimes of the serial killer and the atmosphere of collective fear that spreads through the city; the petty bourgeois environment of London that he knew so well being that of his childhood.
