In 2001 De Gregori published Amore in the afternoon, in which artists such as Franco Battiato (for Il cuoco di Salò) and Nicola Piovani (for second-hand Christmas) collaborate on the arrangements. The album gets the Targa Tenco as best work of the year on a par with Canzoni a crank by Vinicio Capossela. On 28 December 2001 he was a guest at Ron's show on Rai Due in which he sang Beat and take up. In 2002 he embarks on an important four-man tour with Ron, found after more than 20 years, Fiorella Mannoia and Pino Daniele, performing with excellent feedback from audiences and critics in the most beautiful Italian places. From these concerts the double live album On tour will be obtained. After this experience, again in 2002 he published together with Giovanna Marini a record of Italian popular and social songs, Il whistle of steam, obtaining an unexpected success in sales and the Targa Tenco in the interpreters category.
In 2003 the biography What I don't know, I know how to sing was published, edited by Giunti and written by Enrico Deregibus. Also in 2003, De Gregori took part in Bob Dylan's film Masked and anonymous, in which he sang the aforementioned cover Don't tell her that it's not like that. In the explanatory notes of the Masked and Anonymous soundtrack, Dylan defines him as "the legend of Italian pop music". In the same year De Gregori writes the text of My brother and I, to music by Antonello Venditti, the two friends / enemies sing it together. The song ends up on Venditti's record What a fantastic story life is. On May 1st he participates for the first time in the May 1st Concert. On November 12, 2004, Words and Songs (book plus DVD) is released, edited by Vincenzo Mollica for Einaudi Stile Libero, which collects the work of the singer-songwriter from 20 to 50 years old.
