In Vigàta within a few days, three old ladies are attacked by a thief on a motorcycle with a helmet, who shoots but never manages to kill. The commissioner will discover that he was shooting blanks only to create a precedent to then really kill a rich lady. This lady was very fond of her cat and the goldfinch, thanks to which the inspector finds out how things actually went. The material perpetrator is a convict defended years earlier by the victim's husband, who is the mastermind behind the assaults and murder. During the investigation, Deputy Commissioner Augello appears only sporadically as he is on marriage license. He is replaced by Barbara, a childhood friend of Montalbano, who has just won the competition in the police and who will bring some confusion in the police station because she is a very beautiful woman and all three (Augello, Fazio and Montalbano) are attracted to her. Fazio, then, falls in love with her immediately but does not have the courage to tell her what he feels. All together they will investigate the case of the disappearance of Dr. Landolina, a well-known married gynecologist and secretly womanizer. The doctor impregnated a young patient, Mariuccia, who was suffocated by a culturally backward and conservative family. Together Barbara, Fazio and Montalbano will free Mariuccia from her father's clutches, to entrust her to a community run by a priest. Montalbano also discovers that Signora Landolina has made a substantial donation to the association, and realizes that the doctor is not dead and has planned his disappearance with his wife; and in fact, running to the airport, he manages to track down the spouses, but he leaves, letting them go. At the end of the investigation, Montalbano and Augello spend the evening of the latter's bachelor party together and Fazio will find the courage to invite Barbara to go out together.
