In the mannara, an old furnace, two garbage collectors find the corpse of the engineer Luparello inside his car. One immediately thinks of a natural death after an intercourse with a prostitute. In Montalbano something does not add up and, precisely for this reason, he decides not to close the case immediately, but to investigate. The commissioner, after questioning the two garbage collectors and the victim's wife, has the Swedish Ingrid Sjostrom as the main suspect: but thanks to her collaboration, he will discover that Rizzo, the lawyer of the engineer Luparello, was trying to frame her. Rizzo took advantage of Luparello's death to ruin his reputation. The engineer Luparello actually died in the arms of his lover, Giorgio, who turned to Rizzo, who took immediate political advantage. To avenge the memory of his beloved, Giorgio kills the lawyer Rizzo before committing suicide at the end of the episode.
