In a house on the outskirts of Vigata Angelo Pardo, a scientific informant, is found dead with a gunshot to the forehead and his pants down. Montalbano later discovers that Pardo was a doctor who was then banned after the discovery of a clandestine abortion he performed and that he was involved in drug trafficking on behalf of a local mafia family. The investigations seem to point towards the passionate trail. Montalbano is faced with two strong female figures: Michela Pardo, morbidly attached to her brother and full of hatred towards Elena Sclafani, ex-lover of Angelo Pardo, a brazen and sensual young woman who nevertheless hides a tormented past of drug addiction. Montalbano investigates Elena, who nevertheless does absolutely nothing to clear herself of the murder charge: some of her letters are found in which she expresses her jealousy towards Angelo, even if it turns out that she had written them under the dictation of the latter, intending to make his sister desist from opposing his relationship with Elena. The commissioner, however, refuses the easy shortcuts and, putting together all the elements collected (the files found in Pardo's laptop, the key to a portable armored safe, the large bank deposits of the deceased, the coffin for the burial which turned out to be strangely too much large), eventually manages to corner the real culprit of the murder.
