On a road outside Vigata, the abandoned scooter of a girl, Susanna Mistretta, is found, who at that time is going through a difficult time due to the depression of her mother, now dying. The Commissioner finds in her boyfriend Francesco a valid help to dispel the shadows on what immediately seems a strange kidnapping. After the kidnappers send a photo of the girl prisoner, thanks to the enlargement of this and the testimonies of a woman forced into prostitution to pay for the treatment of her disabled husband, Montalbano discovers that the kidnapping was only a staging concocted by the girl herself and by the uncle of her, who fell in love with her sister-in-law when she was young and therefore eager to economically and politically prostrate her brother, because of her depression that led her to retire from life.
