Montalbano, one morning, gets up, opens the shutters of his room and the first thing he sees is the bloodied corpse of a horse on the shore. The inspector barely has time to summon his men and the horse is gone, only the mark of his body remains on the sand and one of his shoes that the inspector absent-mindedly put in his bathrobe pocket. That same day a "foreign" woman, Rachele Estermann, reports the theft of her Super horse to the Vigàta commissioner while in the stables of Saverio Lo Duca, one of the richest men in Sicily, another thoroughbred has vanished into thin air. The scenario of the story is the world of illegal racing, a favorite pastime of a certain landed aristocracy that bets hard. It is in this golden environment that Montalbano must investigate, because, after the horse, a keeper of the stables is also found dead. Among the butlers in livery, barons and countesses Montalbano is a little uncomfortable, while "unknowns" enter Marinella's house once, twice, three times: they don't steal anything but turn everything upside down, they seem to be looking for something. But what? Montalbano does not remain insensitive to the advances of the "stranger", to whom he has been "recommended" by the common acquaintance Ingrid, but in the end he manages to make her interested in her deputy Mimi Augello, always vulnerable to female charm.
