The investigation focuses on the death of Michela Licalzi, found naked and killed by suffocation in an abandoned house. The main suspect is a boy who had a morbid feeling towards the lady. The subject at the center of the story is a very precious and expensive violin, which belonged to the woman. Through the testimonies of Michela's closest friend (who will have a crush on him, going so far as to kiss him) and her husband, Montalbano will discover that it was her Bolognese antiquarian lover who killed the woman, in order to take possession of the violin she had. discovered to be a precious Guarneri del Gesù. Montalbano will encounter many obstacles in his path, placed by his superiors, by the territorial jurisdiction, and by the trouble combined by a colleague of the cabinet; he received the investigation from the commissioner (who took it away from Montalbano), but when his agents tried to arrest the suspected boy, one of them fired for fear seeing a weapon in his hand (but in reality it was a shoe); the official clumsily tried to "fix" the events, ignoring that he was caught by a mafioso who then contacted Montalbano, trying to get everything out in the open.
