.: Tracklist :

The union of conductor Leonard Bernstein, pianist Krystian Zimerman, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and the concertos of Johannes Brahms are, regrettably, not a winning combination. Both Bernstein and Zimerman have an unusually unenergetic vision of these two great works of the piano concerto repertoire. Put together, and these two dull interpretations become interminable. The outer movements of both concertos are utterly ponderous. The blame for setting the initial tempo can rest with Bernstein, but Zimerman does nothing to move things along in the piano solo sections. Zimerman's performance is totally unlike his last, great teacher, Arthur Rubinstein, who played with inexhaustible supplies of passion, energy, and excitement despite being technically flawed at times. Sound quality is another issue for pianist and orchestra alike. Zimerman fails to pull any real dark, full sound from his instrument; the orchestra is similarly and uncharacteristically weak sounding, with some playing from the string section that is downright sloppy. Other than true Bernstein aficionados or conducting students (who are learning how not to conduct these two concertos), this DVD has little to offer the average viewer or collector.
