La BayadËre (The Temple Dancer) is a ballet, originally staged in four acts and seven tableaux by the Ballet Master Marius Petipa to the music of Ludwig Minkus. It was first performed by the Imperial Ballet at the Imperial Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, on February 4 [O.S. January 23] 1877. A scene from the ballet, known as The Kingdom of the Shades, is one of the most celebrated excerpts in all of classical ballet, and it is often extracted from the full-length work to be performed independently.
La BayadËre has been restaged and revived many times throughout its long performance history, most notably by Marius Petipa (1900, for the Imperial Ballet), Alexander Gorsky and Vasily Tikhomirov (1904 for the Ballet of the Moscow Imperial Bolshoi Theatre), Agrippina Vaganova (1932, for the Kirov Ballet), Vakhtang Chabukiani and Vladimir Ponomaryov (1941, for the Kirov Ballet), Rudolf Nureyev (1963óthe scene The Kingdom of the Shades, for the Royal Ballet), Natalia Makarova (1974óthe scene The Kingdom of the Shades; and 1980ófull-length, for American Ballet Theatre), Rudolf Nureyev (1992, for the Paris Opera Ballet), and Sergei Vikharev (2001óin a reconstruction of Petipa's last revival of 1900).
Today, La BayadËre is presented primarily in one of two different versionsóthose productions derived from Vakhtang Chabukiani and Vladimir Ponomaryov's 1941 revival for the Kirov Ballet, and those productions derived from Natalia Makarova's 1980 version for American Ballet Theatre; which is itself derived from Chabukiani and Ponomarev's version.
Exotic and mysterious India serves as the backdrop to this story of doomed love between the warrior Solor and the bayadËre, Nikiya, who is killed by her jealous rival, Gamzatti. Breathtaking sets and costumes are designed by Ezio Frigerio and Franca Squarciapino in this exceptional production, recorded at the Palais Garnier in Paris. Direction and choreography in this fully restored version of Petipa's original ballet are by Rudolf Nureyev. Stars Isabelle GuÈrin, Laurent Hilaire, and …lisabeth Platel.
