On his birthday, the commissioner finds himself struggling with a combative hijacker, Giovanni Strangio, who turns out to be the reckless son of the President of the Province of Montelusa, Michele Strangio. Montalbano realizes that he is facing serious trouble, especially when Strangio himself goes to the commissioner to report the discovery of the body of his fiancée, Mariangela Carlesimo. At the same time, in one of the largest supermarkets in Vigata, a theft is discovered, which, however, shows strange inconsistencies. Montalbano, underestimating the case, entrusts it to his deputy, Augello, but this warehouse is, as known to all commoners, attributable to the Cuffaro family, and in the Board of Directors of the same, in addition to various convenient figures, the Honorable Mongibello stands out. . The manager of the supermarket, a certain Guido Nicotra, is found hanged the day after the complaint. Montalbano begins to come under pressure from above, as the politicians involved in the two cases begin to be annoyed by his attitudes and his investigations; he will therefore find himself forced to force his hand a little to resolve these two cases, acting in a somewhat unusual way, which will cause him to reflect a lot.
