Tan Cologne – Unknown Beyond (2025)

Review:
Dream pop was one of those sub-genres that, when it initially appeared back in the second part of the ’80s was predicted a quick death by rock critics, obviously by those that did not see (hear) much in it. But then, the likes of Cocteau Twins and Mazzy Star took a hold with audiences and the whole thing not only persists, but thrives to this day. That is precisely where a New Mexico duo of Tan Cologne (Lauren Green and Marissa Macias) comes in with their latest (fourth) album Unknown Beyond. In a way, the duo combines the sounds they created previously and stretches them even further. Picking up on the instrumental soundscapes they created on their previous effort Pescetrullo (soundscapes) akin to what is now dubbed as cosmic Americana, Green and Macias further develop their languid guitar sounds (even more spaced-out My Bloody Valentine-like sound) with some subdued, sometimes echoing vocals, that throughout the nine excursions here have some seriously mesmerising effect. What Tin Cologne come up with here is a sort of a stretch on what some might hear as a standard dream pop sound, building on the Mazzy Star psych touches and Kevin Shields’ guitar developments to actually take dream pop into new vistas. You could easily call this music spiritual dream pop. — echoesanddust.com
