Il poliziotto Pierre Niemans (Jean Reno) è inviato nella piccola cittadina di Guernon, nelle Alpi francesi, per indagare su un assassinio brutale. La vittima è stata ritrovata in condizioni agghiaccianti con gli occhi strappati, le mani mozzate e in posizione fetale. Le investigazioni di Niemans lo portano dall'alpinista Fanny Ferreira (Nadia Farès), che ha scoperto il corpo. Nella città vicina di Sarzac, invece, il giovane ispettore Max Kerkerian (Vincent Cassel) scopre che un gruppo di teppisti ha profanato la tomba di una ragazzina morta a 10 anni nel 1982. Questa banda, per qualche strana ragione, sta cancellando il passato della piccola rubando dalla scuola del materiale prezioso per le indagini. Le strade dei due poliziotti si incrociano e questi non tardano a scoprire che i due casi, in apparenza tanto diversi, sono collegati, e uniscono le loro forze per risolverli. La verità è talmente lontana dalla realtà che sembra impossibile scoprirla...
