During WW II, allied POWs in a Japanese internment camp are ordered to build a bridge to accommodate the Burma-Siam railway. Their instinct
is to sabotage the bridge, but under the leadership of Colonel Nicholson they're persuaded the bridge should be built to help morale, spirit.
At first, the prisoners admire Nicholson when he bravely endures torture rather than compromise his principles for the benefit of Japanese
Commandant Colonel Saito, but soon they realise it's a monument to Nicholson, himself, as well as a form of collaboration with the enemy.

Rok 1943, Syjam. Japoński obóz dla jeńców wojennych. Najwyższy rangą oficer brytyjski- pułkownik Nicholson, odważnie występuje
wobec japońskiego komendanta obozu, protestując do zmuszania angielskich jeńców wojennych do pracy na rzecz wroga. Swoją bezkompromisową
postawą wzbudza szacunek zarówno u podwładnych, jak i u wrogów. Komendant Saito ulega nieprzejednanej postawie Brytyjczyka. Wtedy Nicholson,
aby jeszcze bardziej przekonać Japończyków o wyższości wojsk Imperium, wytyka wady budowanego przez nich mostu, twierdząc, że jego ludzie
zrobiliby to o wiele lepiej. Brytyjczycy z własnej woli podejmują się budowy. Pobudzony do działania Nicholson, twardą ręką dyscyplinuje
ludzi do pracy, której sensu nikt poza nim nie widzi. Dla wielu jest to ewidentna praca na rzecz wroga. Jednak solidność brytyjska zwycięża-
most zostaje ukończony. Przed jego inauguracyjnym otwarciem Nicholson wizytuje konstrukcję, napawając się swoim triumfem. Wtedy zauważa
podłożone pod nim przez amerykańskich komandosów ładunki wybuchowe...
