Molly (Kate Hudson) e Carl Peterson (Matt Dillon) si stanno per sposare alle Hawaii. A un certo punto si scopre che uno degli invitati, Randolph Dupree (Owen Wilson), amico fannullone e combinaguai dello sposo, si è perso su un'isola lì vicino e lo devono andare a recuperare.
Quando Carl torna al lavoro, scopre che Bob (Michael Douglas), padre della moglie e suo boss, lo ha promosso a capo di un progetto da lui proposto, anche se profondamente modificato. Nel frattempo Dupree viene sfrattato da casa e perde il lavoro, a causa della sua assenza durante il matrimonio dell'amico. Carl, sentendosi responsabile, invita Randolph a vivere nella casa sua e di Molly. I due neo sposi ben presto si pentono della loro decisione: l'uomo ha un carattere troppo dirompente e disordinato.
Molly allora presenta Mandy, una sua collega, all'ospite indesiderato, nella speranza di vederlo uscire di casa il prima possibile. Tuttavia il proposito si rivela molto complicato da raggiungere. Quando poi Dupree appicca per sbaglio un incendio, gli eventi precipitano...
