Video editors enable users to modify their footage for all kinds of purposes. Whether for creative or practical needs, it’s generally worthwhile to have a video editor around, as it should be able to assist you in anything involving video modification.
Avidemux is an open-source project that aims to give users control over the editing process, such that it provides them with a wide array of filters and configurations to transform footage just as they like.
Your first contact with the software may initially lead you to believe that it’s intended mainly for an experienced audience. While some of that is true insofar as the video and audio output configurations are concerned, there’s little need for the casual user to go venturing into those menus.
In any case, what’s on offer is an editor that has a little bit of everything. You can resize, cut, and modify the perspective of your footage, do color correction to set the mood, add borders, logos, blend frames, and merge multiple clips into one, and more.
For the more adventurous, there’s even an Artistic section that contains a series of filters you can have some fun with: ASCII View, Cartoon, VHS, and many other effects. Note that some can be modified to be more or less intense, so feel free to experiment.
As stated earlier, the program’s output settings are suited for the more advanced user, as each codec comes with its own set of options. This is best exemplified by HEVC’s numerous menus, where the user can configure more general parameters such as the preset and encoding quality, but also go more in-depth by customizing motion estimation, frame encoding, and much more.
Avidemux is a versatile video editor that you can get a lot of mileage out of. Those used to a Timeline panel in their editor may find modifying their footage cumbersome, however, making Avidemux a focused solution that’s rather suited for the enthusiast who’s particular about their encoding, but doesn’t mind adding a few filters, effects, and other such modifications into their work.
