Nel 1947, due facoltosi coniugi americani in crisi provenienti da New York, lui Port Moresby, musicista a corto d'ispirazione, lei Kit, scrittrice ormai priva d'inventiva, intraprendono un viaggio in Africa, con l'amico George Tunner che va in cerca di avventure, mentre essi sperano che un qualche cosa li aiuti a uscire dalla loro crisi coniugale.
