Heading to Lightning Ridge (NSW), Opalton (QLD), and opal mecca, Coober Pedy (SA), the series follows crews of fearless opal miners on their mission to unearth a fortune in some of Australia's harshest and remote landscapes.
The stakes are real as these crews risk it all in their quest to strike it rich. Outback Opal Hunters is a rollercoaster of hope and heartbreak as we delve deep inside the world of opal mining to find out just what it is that has our crews hooked on the hunt.
Australia produces more than 90% of the world's opals. Hidden beneath outback desert plains lies a hidden bounty, 30 million years in the making, waiting to be discovered. Opals are one of the most valuable gemstones on the planet - one stone alone can fetch a million dollars - and it's the dream of striking it rich that drives these crews to push their bodies and bank accounts to breaking point.
Episode 1
With partner Dan stuck at home, Justin starts the new mining season alone. He is dealt a huge blow as he discovers their rich underground mine has been pegged by another miner.
Episode 2
Rookie Justin has cracks in his equipment and his relationships. Col's Crew are a man down and on their last drum of fuel. The Fire Crew are on a wild goose chase hunting a bounty of fabled fire opal.
Episode 3
For the rookies, there's tension as a new partner leads them on a wild-goose chase underground. Plus, the Cooke brothers' season is off to a bad and dangerous start.
Episode 4
Rookie Justin gambles thousands of dollars on buying his way out of trouble. Opal queen Kelly needs a big find underground or risks going broke. Aaron and Greg's Dragonfly claim might finally pay off.
Episode 5
The rookies' relationship is on the rocks as they battle their biggest claim yet, as well as each other. With two partners working at different speeds, there's a fight brewing.
Episode 6
It's last chance for The Rookies' partnership. Col's crew are on a crash course as his reoccurring illness slows them down. The Cooke Brothers fight busted hoses and breakdowns in the quest to strike it rich.
Episode 7
Justin ropes in a stranger in a mad dash to get his excavator across a busy highway. Opal Queen Kelly battles a new claim with a new partner. With Col struck down with illness, Aaron and Greg must push on without him.
Episode 8
Justin recruits fiancee Becky to save him from financial ruin. The Fire Crew face deadly reptiles and a snapped suspension in search of blue fire opal. The Cooke Brothers go 21 metres under.
