Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, il film diretto da André Øvredal e sceneggiato da Guillermo Del Toro, è ambientato negli Stati Uniti durante il 1968, anno burrascoso nel quale tira un'irrequieta aria di cambiamento. Ma i tumulti che invadono l'America sembrano non toccare affatto la piccola cittadina di Mill Valley, sulla quale da diverse generazioni si staglia l'oscura ombra dei Bellows, la cui dimora sorge ai margini della cittadella. Qui vive l'inquietante Sarah Bellows, che si dice nasconda orribili segreti. La donna esorcizza la sua dolorosa esistenza nella stesura di un libro, un'antologia di racconti dell'orrore.
Una sera Stella (Zoe Colletti), Ramon (Michael Garza), Chuck (Austin Zajur) e Auggie (Gabriel Rush) decidono di visitare la villa Bellows, divenuta celebre come casa stregata dopo che Sarah, accusata dell'omicidio di diversi bambini, si è tolta la vita....
