Star Wars is an American epic space-opera media franchise created by George Lucas. The franchise began with the eponymous 1977 film and quickly became a worldwide pop-culture phenomenon. The original film, later subtitled Episode IV – A New Hope, was followed by the sequels Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983), forming what is collectively referred to as the original trilogy. A prequel trilogy was later released, consisting of Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002) and Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005). Years later, a sequel trilogy began with Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015), continued with Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017), and will conclude with Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019). The first eight films were nominated for Academy Awards (with wins going to the first two released) and were commercially successful. Together with the theatrical anthology films Rogue One (2016) and Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), the combined box office revenue of the films equates to over US$9 billion, and is currently the second-highest-grossing film franchise.



The film series was expanded into other media, including television series, video games, novels, comic books, theme park attractions and themed areas, resulting in an all-encompassing fictional universe. In 2012, Lucas sold his company to Disney, and in 2014, most existing spin-off media was made non-canon and rebranded as Legends. The episodic 'Skywalker saga' and the TV series The Clone Wars (2008–2014) define the canon, along with most spin-off works released after April 2014. The franchise holds a Guinness World Records title for the "Most successful film merchandising franchise." In 2018, the total value of the Star Wars franchise was estimated at US$65 billion, and it is currently the fifth-highest-grossing media franchise of all-time.



The Star Wars franchise depicts the adventures of characters "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...." in which humans and many species of aliens (often humanoid) co-exist with robots, or 'droids', who may assist them in their daily routines; space travel between planets is common due to hyperspace technology. The rises and falls of different regimes are chronicled throughout the saga: the democratic Galactic Republic is corrupted by its supreme chancellor, Palpatine—secretly the dark lord Darth Sidious. After orchestrating the Clone Wars between the government and a separatist confederation, Palpatine overthrows the Republic, and establishes the Galactic Empire with Darth Vader as his right-hand man. The Empire is fought by the Rebel Alliance in a Galactic Civil War that spans several years until the apparent defeat of the Emperor. The surviving Rebellion gives rise to the New Republic, while the remnants of the Empire reform as the First Order. Heroes of the former rebellion lead the Resistance against the oppressive dictatorship.



So far, the Star Wars saga has consisted of eight episodes
  (in the sequence of events in the plot), with another coming out:

Episodes 4 to 6 form the "original trilogy" (OT),
from 1 to 3 form the "trilogy trilogy" (PT),
and episodes 7 to 9 represent the final "sequel trilogy" (CT).

In addition to the three main trilogies, an "anthology" was conceived.
It will include 3 side stories from the Star Wars universe.
The first anthology film has already been released entitled "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."
His story revolves around the mission of the Rebels to steal the plans of the first Death Star,
the most powerful imperial weapon at the time.

The second film of the anthology talks about Han Solo and says Star Wars: The Story of Han Solo (2018)

The third movie will be released in 2020 and it is not explicit who it will be told. Either for Bob Fet or Obi-Wan Kenobi.
