Nella Parigi del 1482 il burattinaio zingaro Clopin Trouillefou narra l'origine del gobbo del titolo. Un gruppo di zingari si era nascosto illegalmente a Parigi, ma erano caduti in un'imboscata del giudice Claude Frollo. Una zingara nel gruppo aveva tentato di fuggire con il suo bambino deforme, ma Frollo l'aveva inseguita e uccisa fuori dalla cattedrale di Notre-Dame; aveva provato ad uccidere anche il bambino, gettandolo in un pozzo, ma l'arcidiacono della cattedrale era intervenuto accusando Frollo di aver ucciso una donna innocente. Per espiare il suo peccato, Frollo aveva accettato con riluttanza di crescere il bambino deforme a Notre-Dame come fosse suo figlio, chiamandolo Quasimodo.
